Theatre Trips

Our annual spring Theatre Trip typically takes place in April and is open to all eligible Gunn Theatre students. Last spring, we traveled to Ashland, Oregon, for the 90th anniversary of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where we enjoyed several classic works by Shakespeare, as well as contemporary award-winning plays. The previous year, in April 2024, we traveled to New York City to see five fabulous Broadway productions in just four days.

This spring, we will return to New York City! Stay tuned to find out more about how to sign up for this once-in-a-lifetime Theatre Trip!

Here are some highlights and photos of our trip to NYC this past April 2024.

New York City Theatre Trip, April 2024

Day 1, Fri April 12

We took a walking Tour of Lincoln Center, through Central Park to the Metropolitan Museum of Art … in the rain!  In the evening we saw an incredible performance of Cabaret on Broadway, starring Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin.

Day 2, Sat April 13

Students participated in a movement workshop, and watched plays Uncle Vanya and Stereophonic. Incredibly, we got to see Gunn Theatre alum Will Brill give a tremendous performance in Stereophonic that earned him the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play!!! (Steve Carell’s performance as Uncle Vanya in Uncle Vanya was none too shabby either.)

Day 3: Sun April 14

We visited the Museum of Broadway and ate pizza at John’s Pizzeria with several Gunn Theatre alumni, including Will Brill!  We watched the musical The Outsiders, which was directed by Ms. Lo’s former Paly Student Danya Taymor, and Mother Play starring Jessica Lange and Jim Parsons. The Outsiders is a gritty, coming-of-age story based on SE Hinton's classic novel. The music, book and choreography were so powerful they brought many of us to tears. After the show we were treated to an hour-long talk back with Danya, who went on to win the Tony award for Best Director of a Musical!!!!!

Day 4: Mon April 15

Tour of Radio City Musical Hall and an interview with a real live Rockette, then flew back to SFO in time for school on Tuesday.
